Women around the world do most of the work in feeding people and in raising children yet this is often overlooked, particularly by those (men) in power. Melissa of the blog Shakesville put together a photo essay of women farmers from around the world, including this photo of a farmer from Brazil and two children.

Taylor Mitchell, Rest in Peace

Taylor Mitchell was a folk singer and songwriter from Toronto. She was only 19 and just released her debut album in March, 2009. She had a promising future and many fans in the folk music scene.

Sadly, on Oct. 27, 2009 while on tour in the province of Nova Scotia, she was hiking a local trail and was attacked and killed by two coyotes.

Josephine Mandamin and The Water Walkers

Josephine Mandamin is an Anishinabe elder whose mission is to wake people up to the damage that has been done to the Great Lakes. She and other Anishinabe women and supporters have been walking around the Lakes offering prayers and thanks to the water and to raise awareness.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an author from Nigeria whose stories deal with war and conflict in her home country. Find out more at her website and a website dedicated to her.

In the above TED talk she discusses what happens when we only have one story of someone or group of people. What does this mean for women when we only have limited stories of ourselves and our stories are continually being erased? How much women’s history are we taught in school?
